Are you talking about the Saco River mouth? I surfed it on a big south swell back in the 90s. It only breaks if the swell is 15 foot or bigger. It will be off shore there and long 8 foot lefts will come through.

Lets keep it that way! Tell everyone Jim Malcolm said Hi! I surf the Polls and blowhole down here, but nothing rocks more than the ledge and bone yards!

the low tide break that i surf at occasionally (an ok wave but actually quite fickle) is directly in front of the parking lot adjacent to fox island. thats where most people are when theres swell. from there all the way around the corner to the fort is popham beach although i think on the corner where the shoreline goes from eastward to northward may be called hunnewell beach???

although the idea of "surf where its best" is obviously the general rule of thumb, with a beach thats like 4 miles long, things can get really frustrating sometimes.

im kinda struggling on finding the place that apparently pitches up hollow mackers at high tide, ill get it soon enough but....leftpointer, when you say "the other end of the beach" where do you mean?

i've surfed around popham a few times, but honestly I've always been confused as to what break people are generally referring to when they talk about "popham beach." I think technically popham beach is the part of the beach that faces north, but I mean can anyone clarify which part of the beach (which wraps from facing North at the northermost point to facing south-se at the southernmost point) people are typically referring to when they talk about surfing popham beach. not that it really matters... surf where the waves are best of course, but I've always been curious...

It really sucks on a hurricane swell when u want to drop a great bomb wave, but you look on the inside and right off your bottom turn you are goin to end up slicing 5-10 people with your fins.

A little note on Popham. I have only surfed Popham two times but each sesh has been worth the trip.

Popham has always been a good option to go surf when the swells are receding where I live in the Portland area.

The Fjord itself sticks out like a finger into the open ocean and I have seen more sea life here then anywhere else closer to Portland.

High Tide and Low Tide make completely different breaks at the beach. When I arrived last the entire beach was emptied to a low tide and the waves were cracking up off of Fox Island (a landmark you can use to divide between the two beach faces). This produced a lot longer ride then the steep barrels that I had surfed before at High Tide at the other end of the beach.

I wouldnt long board here unless it was quite small, because you will just be outgunned by the wave. The Steep barrels of high tide ask for a small shortboard, as well as low tide as well.
