I got a surfboard in the beginning of July, and i had surfed a few times before that. But since my house got rented out basicly of of July I im just starting to surf. But the question that i have is when you want to ride the face of the wave, do stand up as soon as you feel your being ppulled by the wave. Because when ever i catch a wave i wait till it crashes, or like drops and the nose dives in most of the time, and when it doesnt nosedive, i can only ride the white water...

In a galaxy far, far away, I surfed everyday. Some forty years later, i am thinking about going surfing again and wondered if there are any of you out there that need to get into surfing shape before actually hitting the water, and if so, what type of stuff are you doing. I'm doing pushups, situps etc but also wonder whether there are some more paddling specific exercises. If I recall correctly, one needs to paddle at the rate of the incoming wave in order to catch it, otherwise frustration sets in. Any suggestions? Also, I don't plan to be doing any winter surfing but would like to know what you think about wetsuits for the spring, summer and fall. Many thanks.

Hey Guys!

Well, let me first start by introducing myself. My name is Debbie and I'm an executive assistant to Brian Grazer of Imagine Entertainment out here in LA. I'm sure some of you have heard of Brian Grazer as he is one of THE top producers/actors in Hollywood. He has won many Emmy and Oscar awards. His latest venture is Imagine Entertainment in which was founded along with Ron Howard. Together they have been involved in various projects such as Apollo 13, A Beautiful Mind, and most relevant; Blue Crush.

Due to the extremely positive reviews of Blue Crush and the increase of surfers in the past few years, as well as popular shows such as John in Cincinnati, we've decided to pursue another movie in which the story line is surf related. Since the whole Hawaiian/California surf scene has been done with Blue Crush, we've decided to goto the other extreme and that has brought us to the cold waters of the East Coast and that is why I need your help!

We are working on a script now that revolves around a young surfer (Aaron Carter) that spent his first 16 years surfing in the beautiful waves of SoCal. At the age of 16 as he enters manhood his world falls apart. His parents get divorced and his father moves him away with him to New England for a new job. In the past he has always used surfing to escape his problems but leaving the lively surf scene of SoCal for the dark chilling waters provides new challenges for this young man. Instead of surfing the warm sunny seas of SoCal in boardshorts, he now has to suit up in 6mm neoprene wetsuits and brave the arctic chill of New England. Not only does he have to battle with the weather, but the grumpy locals of the infamous Rhode Island breaks don't take kindly to the new Californian transplant. This movie will follow this young man as he grows up in a whole new world and tries to get accustomed to new living conditions both in his family life and his social life as well.

This is where we need YOU! We will begin filming some of the winter surf scenes this year and we need extras! We're looking for male winter surfers for both background shots as well as possible stunt doubles. Filming will take place at breaks in and around Rhode Island as well as other areas of New England and you will be compensated! I will post more information as I receive it but feel free to send me a PM regarding any questions, hints, or ideas for filming this movie in New England.

We at Imagine Entertainment look forward to spending some time in New England this year! Hope to see y'all!

-Debbie

Hey...I live in SC now and just got back from ME...Surf can be super fun there (had no wetsuit, shoulder high clean beachbreak ...gotta love it, except for that "surf zone" bs )...Actually, grew up there and surfed in winter/summer, with snow, crowds, micro swell, huge tides, victory at sea poo-filled mess (ok, that was in RI, ME is very nice by comparison)...Like the other poster said, you'll miss s swell Pleasure Pt or w swell Middle Peak, etc., but the people are generally way friendlier, and the sharks are smaller in ME. Generally in a crowd in ME, 10% of the people will actually know how to surf (more or less depending on the break and season...just like SC). Other ME perks...property is cheaper, you can always do surf trips like everyone else there who really wants waves. Portland is a great small town/big city with progressive politics (like SC), but real working class roots too. Get a kayak and a super fat noserider and you should be able to get your ocean fix on a regular basis (as long as you drop your expectations for 3x/week shoulder-head high point break waves)... Bonuses being that you may score head high point breaks in ME with few other takers if you get it dialed (and get a 6/4). That said, there's a reason I visit ME and live in SC...Good luck!

i just took up surfing this summer...i'm a yoga teacher and that helps alot..but i'm not a super strong swimmer and find dealing with the power of the ocean quite challenging (mentally as well as physically)..the most intimidating part for me is getting caught inside and bashed about by the sea...my 50 year old body doesn't love that.
...anyway..just wondering if there are any other women out there my age learning to surf ..i'd love to hear about your experiences learning at this age...
thanks!
