Like many American outsider-adventurers, Dorian “Doc” Paskowitz set out to realize a utopian dream. Abandoning a successful medical practice, he sought self-fulfillment by taking up the nomadic life of a surfer. But unlike other American searchers like Thoreau or Kerouac, Paskowitz took his wife and nine children along for the ride, all eleven of them living in a 24 foot camper. Together, they lived a life that would be unfathomable to most, but enviable to anyone who ever relinquished their dreams to a straight job. The Paskowitz Family proved that America may be running out of frontiers, but it hasn’t run out of frontiersman.

PORTLAND, Maine, March 21, 2008-Proven in the Northeast is now accepting submissions for it's 4th annual boardsports film festival and contest .
Filmmakers of all abilities are invited to submit films of seven minutes or less that have elements of surfing, skateboarding and/or snowboarding in New England. There is no fee to enter.
"It doesn't matter if you're seven or 70, if you've never picked up a camera or you've been cranking out films in your basement for years-this contest is open to everyone," said contest coordinator and filmmaker Ben Keller "The caliber of films gets better every year. We are really excited for this years festival!"
Proven in the Northeast was established to encourage filmmakers of all levels to creatively express their ideas about boardriding in New England and have their work seen by a large audience.
"Last year's incredible contest proved that New England is home to some seriously talented amateur filmmakers and boardriders," said Keller. "And with the addition of the Peoples Choice online contest and the TV special that is airing on the RSN network, we have been able to bring their films to an even wider audience on the web, and broadcast nationwide."

BlueGreen is a feature length documentary by local filmmaker Ben Keller (Ishmael) that gets to the heart of why we as humans are connected to the ocean. Through the profiles and stories of thirteen subjects, the viewer is taken on a journey of discovery that goes far beyond the ordinary and obvious. These profiles are set to a visual tapestry of surf, sea and sound.
A bulk of the action footage was shot in Maine. Don Perkins of the Gulf Of Maine Research Center speaks about the importance of the Gulf of Maine, and Lobsterman/Surfer Mike Beauregard elucidates on the power of the gulf on his life..

2007 CALL FOR ENTRIES For Proven In The Northeast! The time has come! The call for entries for the 2007 Proven In The Northeast Film Festival & Contest is now. No, you don'tneed to submit your film now- it's due by August 31st of this year.
This years rules aren't that different from last year... Submit your 7 minute or less surf/skate/snow film to us by August 31st, and it will be judged by our panel of judges, the top 10 will make it into the final to be shown at the event. That evening a winner will be presented with a grand prize. And what an event it was last year! We had over 200 folks turn out, the grand prize was a Sony HDV camcorder and the Surfrider Foundation was helped out tremendously. Watch for a short clip from last years event soon...
You don't want to miss out on this event! Check out the rules section for the 411 on your submission! There are actually a couple of different things this year though, the first of which is three simple words: STORY, STORY, STORY. Films with even the slightest bit of story will be considered before others this year. Just something cohesive, it doesn't have to be a plot, but an idea. The second is that part of the deal this year is that the top 5 finalists are eligible to be included in a 1 hour special to be broadcast nation-wide on the RSN Network- but only- ONLY if you have complete music rights to the soundtrack on your film. SO think carefully because here is a chance for your film to be seen on a nationwide network.

Join Surfrider NNE for a fun and informative reception to honor Margo Pellegrino who has been paddling her 20 foot-long one-person outrigger canoe from Miami to Maine in order to raise awareness of Coastal issues. Margo is a 40 year-old amateur paddler who left her husband and two children on May 7th in Miami, FL with the goal of reaching Camden, ME on July 21st. Margo will make 74-stops on her 2,000 mile, 11-week journey. She has been paddling as much as 40 miles per day, everyday, for nearly three months, speaking to numerous communities along the way. Though traveling alone, she is being aided by a network of volunteers and ocean conservation groups including the Surfrider Foundation and the National Environmental Trust. Margo hopes that her paddle will attract more people to these organizations and will promote their missions and work. She also wants to show her children how to make a difference in the world.
Additional Notes: Proceeds from pledges that Margo has been receiving along the way will go to the Surfrider Foundation. For more info visit http://www.miami2maine.com.
